ManawapooFirst five-eighth Ryan Bambry has been confirmed as a loan player from Otago. The Otago Rugby Union has confirmed that Bambry will not be called back to Dunedin if it has injuries to its other first-fives.

"It opens the door for him to have a long-term contract with us if he delivers the goods," said Smith.

Bambry is in the last year of his contract with Otago. He played five games as a sub for its NPC team last year and was in the Highlanders' Super 14 squad this year.

Varsity vs FOB
Scrumtime - FOB vs Varsity
Varsity playing out at the heavy track of Johnstone Park in Feilding lost 17 - 10 to FOB on Saturday.

Both teams were evenly matched, and the difference essentially came down to FOB's ability to concentrate their forward drives that led to the 2 tries by FOB Number 8 Feofa'aki Lea.

Varsity took on the heavier FOB pack and had a number of good drives, but the ball security at times was found wanting, as veteren FOB Flanker Jamie Gutsell snaffled pill with ease. We missed the foraging skills of captain Josh Bradnock - away on rep duties in Whangarei.

Big lock Alex Waite had a strong game, with the other 2 metre tall lock Leon Power, combining well at scrum time.

In the backs Louis Maxwell had a strong game at 2nd five - with solid defence and a number of powerful breaks.

The  Varsity forwards closed the game out with a try to James Oakes from a forward drive after a lineout to secure the successful conversion and the vital bonus point.
