Kia Toa lived up to its pre-match predictions by dousing a young Varsity side and Freyberg might face another tough season after being shut out at the army camp where Hurricane Hayden Triggs came on for Linton Army at halftime. Feilding Old Boys' station as a lowly- rated underdog which had lost 16 players lasted just one Saturday. Under new coaches Potene Paewai and Victor Herbert, FOB was expected to be a struggler, but instead dwarfed Bush, one of the teams predicted to be among the big resurgents. Bush, without Frank Bryant in Hong Kong, lost Turbos first-five Mattie James injured soon after halftime. Bush was intimidated by the big FOB forwards, there was an all-in brawl and FOB took control in the second half. |

All the paperwork suggests Te Kawau, Kia Toa and and Feilding Yellows should be the big movers this season. Te Kawau's influx of experienced players hasn't been so much from overseas as of rep calibre men filtering back to the Real Blokes. Any side would look healthier with the return of centre Sam Leung-Wai after more than five years away playing for Hawke's Bay, Taranaki and in England; Bryan Matenga, who last played for Manawatu against the Lions in 2005, and long- serving hooker Simon Easton after a season with Horowhenua-Kapiti. Then there's halfback Charlie Beetham whose rep days stretch back to the Central Vikings era. He'll play when his air force helicopter duties allow. |

Former Varsity players coaching clubs in Auckland.
In Auckland, former barnstorming Manawatu and Varsity No 8 Emosi Koloto is taking charge of newly promoted Papatoetoe, and another former Manawatu and Varsity No 8 Mana Otai moves from Te Papapa to Marist. |
