Scouts were scouring the nooks and crannies of Linton Camp for players as crisis time looms for the soldiers next weekend.

On Saturday, Linton Army got the win it needed over Te Kawau to stay alive in the race for the top six.

But this week, the New Zealand Army team is at the inter-services tournament in Auckland and 15 of Linton's 26-man squad will be playing there.

A handful might be able to return for next Saturday's clash with Kia Toa but even so, the soldiers will need more reinforcements than that. Army rugby is important just now with the Army test against the British army a big deal at Arena Manawatu on Friday, May 25.

Te Kawau's Real Blokes weren't distracted by duck-shooting nor the past champion teams' reunions at Rongotea on Saturday.

They stayed on track by bouncing back from their loss to Varsity a week previously by putting Marist away by 16 points.

A pattern is emerging with five games of the first round remaining. College Old Boys, Feilding and Kia Toa appear sure bets to make the top six.

The efficiency of COB is such that the other two are not yet on the same tier.

PIGGY BACKING: Varsity flanker James Oakes takes Te Kawau centre Luke Harvey along for the ride during their clash at Massey University on Saturday.
Look out! Kia Toa has emerged as a classy challenger this season judging by the way the double blues dismembered High School Old Boys on Saturday.

Among the eight-try onslaught were four by promising fullback Kurt Baker as the Kia Toa backs cut loose.

Even hardened HSOB stalwarts were battling to remember when their team had been so comprehensively beaten.

New coach Tasi Tahuna was staying sober about it, crediting Kias' new-found depth.

"It was good to see things executed properly," he said. "There are still a few things we can work on, where we can be better. Here's hoping we'll be in the top four– we'll see what happens when the rain comes."
