New Zealand under-21 side should be a potent attacking force at the world championships in France next month judging by its final trial game at Massey University's Rugby Institute yesterday. On the eve of coach Greg Cooper naming his final squad of 26 players today, the Probables side clocked up eight tries on the way to a comfortable 56-19 win against a Possible XV. One of the players in the beaten Possibles side was Varsity lock Leon Power, who came on at halftime when his side was already 21-5 down. Power claimed several good line-out takes during his 40-minute run and played a part in his side's revival in the final quarter when they matched the Probables two tries apiece. But the game was already over as a contest after a third 20-minute quarter in which the Probables stretched out to a 42-5 lead. |

IF there is a question in club rugby which needs answering, it is: What's wrong with Feilding Old Boys? Ten of its players on Saturday had featured in the rep trial last Wednesday and yet they were well beaten by the resurgent Kia Toa at Arena Manawatu. Currently they are rep prospects but if their minds are elsewhere, many are effectively playing their way out of contention. Only five-eighth Graham Smith, who's looking fit and sharp this season, and perhaps Fijian wing Simeli Tuiteci, looked anything liked rep players on Saturday. It was FOB's third successive loss after starting as the competition favourite. |

The entire Kia Toa loose forward trio was among the squad of 27 players named yesterday for Manawatu's match against a Hawke's Bay XV at Palmerston North on Wedneday week. It was the first indication how the coaches are looking at the dawn of Manawatu's biggest season since it was relegated from division one in 1988. The Kia Toa pack has been transformed since No.8 Daniel Alofa arrived from King Country and Ma'ake Tu'ipulotu came from Feilding to unite with hard hitting openside flanker Tonga Folau. Tu'ipulotu, the brother of occasional Hurricanes' midfield back Tane, played 13 games for Manawatu in 1999-00, only for a serious knee injury to all but force him out of the game. The Manawatu Evergreens XV to play Hawke's Bay has yet to be named. |
