New player in the Varsity colours this year is Alex Waite - a 2m, 114 kg lock - he will certainly add some beef to the Varsity scrum this year. Alex has come to the club via Sydney University RFC to stake a claim in the 2006 Manawatu NPC side.

A bit more about Alex...
Alex grew up in Wellington where in 1986 he played his first game of rugby for the Western Suburbs Giants. He considers himself to be "pretty easy going but never shies of hard work and a challenge".
Alex has a Bachelor of Commerce from Otago and is currently completing a Master of Commerce in finance through Sydney University. He is currently on leave from his job in Sydney as a Relationship Manager for the Institutional Banking division of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and is working for Manawatu Rugby as a Regional Development Officer.
Through recent years Alex has played rugby in a variation of countries. In 1997 he played for the Wanderers Rugby club in Johannesburg. From 1998-2000 Alex played for Otago University. He then went to Sydney and from 2001-2005 he played for Sydney University. Alex has proven that he is more than capable on the rugby field making Otago Under 21's in 1999, in 2000 he played for the New Zealand Universities Rugby team and in both 2003 and 2005 he played for the Australia Universities Rugby team.
Alex credits his family with being the greatest influence on his rugby career. He also named Justin Cullen, a former Hawkes Bay player, as someone who he looks up to in his career.
Alex's most favourite rugby moment happened in 2005 at the New South Wales Grand finals day. He was a member of the Sydney University 1st XV who played in the Shute Shield final against Warringah Rats. Sydney University had teams in most of the finals that day, winning a number of the competitions.
His least favourite rugby moment also happened on that same day. During the game, which SydneyUniversity lost 29-23; Alex was sin-binned for a professional foul, naturally he claims that it wasn't a foul (sure it wasn't Alex). In the time that Alex was off the field Wycliff Palu scored two tries for the Rats bringing them back into the game and in doing so setting his team up to beat Sydney University in the final few minutes.
If Alex makes the Manawatu team for the Air New Zealand cup the one team he would most like to defeat is the Tasman Mako's. Pete Playford is playing for Tasman this year and is a former teammate of Alex, both of who played for Sydney.
Outside of rugby other sports such as golf, hunting and fishing also interest Alex. As a hobby he also has an interest in forestry. |
