COB given big fright by Varsity

A thriller for College Old Boys proved to be a heart-breaker for Varsity as the second round heated up at Massey University on Saturday. COB won 30-27 by scoring a minute from time to remain unbeaten, while the students signalled they could be a Hankins Shield threat in a month's time. It pleased COB coach John Cruden no end to see his side pushed for the second week in a row. Varsity played really well; they stepped up against us again, he said. We seem to bring the best out in them....

First up win in 2nd Round

Varsity 16, Feilding 10In an old-fashioned tight game, twice the Yellows had it there for the taking, but they blew it with the line open and Varsity said thanks.Even so, the scholars had the better of the first half, especially in territory, just not on the scoreboard, after they'd been ahead 9-0.Both defended well, there were few line breaks and Feilding snuck in front with a try and penalty just before halftime.Varsity got their try 10 minutes after halftime and later had a hot 10-minute spell but couldn't penetrate, with Isaac Thompson putting the ball in behind the Yellows. In the...

Cameron J. Clow 1979-2009 R.I.P.

Cameron started at Massey University in 1997 and made the Varsity K squad of that year - and was a solid performer who gave his all for the team. He was always involved in the thick of things when it mattered against teams that needed a bit of sorting out.Cameron also made the Manawatu under 19 side that year, which he might not have made if I hadn't of dropped him to the Reserves and dirty-dirties for some lack lustre training and commitment to the team. That was spark that was needed to up his training and commitment to...

The final round game of the Jubilee Cup round for Varsity was a game of two halves. After racing out to a lead of 24 -0 at halftime. The students thought that this would be good enough, and let FOBO socre 19 points in the second half and add only a penailty to Isaac Thompson to close out the scoring.A thrilling 19-point, second-half fightback by the Stags was snuffed out near the end by a Varsity penalty, their only points of the second half.Varsity led 24-0 at halftime, wind-assisted,and had so much ball should have added three more tries to...
