Their names say as much about their approaches as anything else and when the Hurricanes face the Waratahs in the first semi-final of the inaugural Super 14 season in Wellington on Friday, it will be a contrast of styles.
Like their round-robin encounter in Sydney last week, the Hurricanes will again try to live up to their reputation as a team of devastating runners. The Waratahs will attempt to play pretty, flowery rugby.
But the 'Tahs won't be going soft. Their forwards are far too physical for that. They are just far more structured in their approach than the 'Canes are. They are the more 'neat' team of the two.
In fact that was their downfall in Sydney last week. The Waratahs appeared to be 'frozen stiff', almost too scared to try something out of the ordinary. Their almost robotic approach allowed the Hurricanes to build up an early lead and then shut the Waratahs out with a heroic defensive effort in the second half.

Put together a front row with a combined weight of more than 350kg, as in last night's Manawatu representative trial, and you have the basis of a tsunami-strength pack.
That's how it panned out with the superior forwards taking the Probables to a 29-19 win over the Possibles at the Arena Manawatu back grounds.
With two huge props in Sam Moore and Talau Hala and Rob Foreman, of Puketoi farming stock, ensconced between them, there was plenty of horsepower to pummel away at the lighter Possibles eight.
And when Probables locks Hayden Triggs, Alex Waite and Daniel Alofa, all hotshots for the Manawatu NPC side, were taken off at halftime, the Possibles crawled back into the game after trailing 22-0. But the Possibles lineout had been misfiring.
If there was a standout with his head continually down barging forward it was Alofa playing on the blindside flank. Last year's standout King Country forward goes about his business in commanding fashion. |

Hurricanes lock Jason Eaton is in a race against time to be fit for his team's Super 14 semi-final showdown with the Waratahs at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Friday. It will be the Hurricanes' first-ever home semi-final.
Eaton has been bracketed with Luke Andrews and will be given every opportunity to prove his fitness, as he struggles to overcome an ankle injury.
In a rematch of the Hurricanes'19-14 win over the Waratahs last Saturday, the winner will qualify for the inaugural Super 14 final.
The Crusaders host the Bulls in Christchurch on Saturday in the other semi-final.
There are two confirmed changes in the Hurricanes side for this return encounter. |
