Varsity's stuttery season start has given way to a safe fourth place and five wins after breaking Te Kawau hearts on Saturday.

Real Blokes' fans watched their forwards take it to the students, lead for a hour and then lose the bonus point when Varsity first-five Isaac Thompson put up one of his cross-field specials for Caleb Kahapukoro to dot down on fulltime.

The Varsity backs were the difference, espcially in the second half when Thompson controlled things with his boo. The Te Kawau forwards had dominated the first half, roaring into it even without Turbos David Te Moana and Doug Tietjens.

Prop Grant Polson's experience saved Varsity up front, but Te Kawau had a chance near the end only to mess up a quick tap and Varsity capitalised on the error.
