Despite missing 13 points from goal-kicks, Kias deserved the win thanks to having more of the ball and dominating the students for the opening 30 minutes. Even so, Varsity came close to snatching it after a volley of penalties from the Taranaki ref.
Kia Toa was more physical and impenetrable in the midfield where Varsity couldn't get through and drifted sideways. Varsity's try came early in the second half to make it 12-10. Both teams lost top flankers to injury in the first half, Josh Bradnock (Varsity) and Tonga Folau (Kia), as well as Varsity first-five Isaac Thompson. There were strong games also from James Solomon, Jason Pearson, Tony Mafi, Ben Kaufusi and Bertus Mulder for Kia Toa and for Maxwell, James Oakes and Dan Waldon for Varsity. At Arena Manawatu: Kia Toa 17 (Ben Kaufusi, Jason Pearson, Jason Solomon, tries; Joggie Viljoen con) Varsity 13 (Louis Maxwell try; Paul Tietjens, con, 2 pen) HT 12-3. |
