The New Zealand Universities team won its third match on Wednesday night, beating Japan under-23 39-17 at Osaka after leading 20-5 at halftime. The Japan team included the usual three Tongans and the game was played in wet and cold (3 deg) conditions.
Manager Steve Morris (Massey University) said it was superior tactical nous that won it for NZU, with Chris Noakes playing well at first- five as well as Sean Romans at halfback. In the forwards, Manawatu flanker Josh Bradnock had a great game, as did prop Jeremy Aldworth.
Massey hooker Willie Tran has a knee injury.
The team was yesterday travelling to Kyoto for its final game in Japan.
