Well done to Leana Urlich for being selected in the Manawatu Women's side. She is Varsity's sole representative in the side.
The challenge the 2006 season the Ezibuy Manawatu Women's team is about to undertake will be huge. Like all things when you have to step up a grade the character of everyone involved in the team will be tested. Unlike most teams we can only call on the experience of one player who has played at a higher level, this being Farah Palmer.
Most teams in the competition boast at least a handful of past or present New Zealand players. Some teams like Auckland include a whole team of Black Ferns. Bearing this in mind it is always good to go into any competition as the underdog and we certainly have this tag. The benefits our team have is a good mix of young players with a sprinkling of experience and a heap of enthusiasm. Players to watch out for this year will be, Captain - Pauline Chadwick, 1st 5/8 - Selica Winiata, Fullback - Anika Tiplady, Loose Forwards - Sherry Hansen, Amy Bush, Emma Aldworth and Fuarosa Time.
With the Women's World Cup taking place this year, all the Black Ferns are only available for the first two rounds of the competition before leaving. This will mean that the remaining rounds could throw up a few surprises. Unfortunately for Manawatu we strike the two provinces with the most Black Fern's in them, first up. These being Auckland and Otago. In our favour both games are at home and if last years support is anything to go on, we will have a strong home crowd advantage.
