Varsity 21 (Blair Robinson, James Oakes tries; Isaac Thompson con, 3 pen)
Kia Toa 20 (Jason Pearson, Moeaki Samita, Peter Thorne tries; Ben Hekenui con, pen)
HT 10-all.

Feilding winger Brad Carr continues to light up Johnston Park with his sparkling running.

He was at it again on Saturday, sparking tries from long distance against Linton Army, which saw the most talented wing in the union in action.

Carr bamboozled the army defence and had Feilding up 21-0 in quick time.

He scored two tries and 16 of the Yellows' points as they got revenge on the army team which had won their first-round class by 11-7.

The result made little difference to the quarterfinals draw because it was only Feilding's second win of the round. The other win was over Kia Toa.

Somehow, College Old Boys hung on to beat a Feilding Old Boys team which should have won, but had two tries disallowed and bombed two others with overlaps and the line open at Ashhurst.

An FOB win would have snared it the runnerup spot, but Varsity got that thanks to Isaac Thompson slotting a penalty two minutes from time to beat a game Kia Toa.

High School Old Boys ended up winning the bottom-six competition by beating Marist and denying the greens a bonus point. They finished equal on top, but HSOB gained the No.7 seeding thanks to twice having beaten Marist.

Marist thus has the unenviable task of facing unbeaten COB next Sunday and HSOB plays Varsity.

The matches have been drawn for next Sunday, but many teams are pushing to play on Saturday. They would have to be scheduled before Manawatu's match against Auckland at 2pm on Saturday.

The Manawatu Rugby Union intends to play the games on neutral grounds where possible, but if not, the top seeded team will get home advantage.

The draw for the bottom-four round robin has been delayed because to have done it on seedings, Oroua would have played Te Kawau and Bush would've faced Freyberg, the same two clashes as on Saturday.

Varsity 21 Kia Toa 20
An open game with Kia Toa's loose men putting in big hits. Kias led 10-0 after two tries in half an hour, one when Varsity messed up a lineout on its line. The other came from a Kias' blindside dab.

Varsity battled back to level by halftime when flanker Blair Robinson scored and it was close throughout the second half.

The Kia backs ran straight and hard and the Varsity tackling only just held. But midway through the half Varsity got in front, 18-17, traded penalties before Thompson's boot decided it from 40 metres.

The Varsity tight five went well, but Kias will be a threat in the quarterfinals.

At Massey University:
Varsity 21 (Blair Robinson, James Oakes tries; Isaac Thompson con, 3 pen)
Kia Toa 20 (Jason Pearson, Moeaki Samita, Peter Thorne tries; Ben Hekenui con, pen)
HT 10-all.

College OB 13 FOB 12
FOB might have lost all three times to COB, but FOB isn't far away. They'll probably meet again in the semifinals.

FOB learned that teams like COB have to be put away. For the opening 20 minutes COB went well and FOB didn't touch the ball.

COB had Nick Buckley back while FOB brought on reps David Palu and Simeli Tuiteci and had Eddie Hei Hei starting. They threw the ball around, but got their second try only two minutes from time after applying the pressure for most of the second half.

FOB has lost Aki Lea with a severe hamstring strain, but No.8 August Chadwick stepped up well.

FOB had COB on the rack many times out wide and under heat in the scrums, but COB survived in a game well refereed by Canterbury NPC referee James McPhail.

At Ashhurst Domain:
COB 13 (Blair Campbell, Chris Moke tries; Jun Tomasi Cama pen)
FOB 12 (David Palu, Mattie James tries; James con)
HT 5-0.

Feilding 27 Linton 17
Linton was flat, took wrong options and the Yellows made it pay, with Carr cutting up and Paula Maisiri leading the forwards until he went off injured after halftime.

Feilding was expansive for most of the first half and only for the last six minutes did Linton camp in the Feilding 22 and scored a try with the last play of the half. The 70-80 metre counter-attacks flummoxed the soldiers.

The second spell was even, end-to-end attacks, but the Linton forwards got rolling with a superior scrum and were back to 24-17 down with 10 minutes left. But Feilding played well for the last 10 minutes and kept Linton stuck in the corners.

Young flanker Kyle Murray stood out for Yellows, as did Karl Stewart and Casey Lowe for Linton.

At Johnston Park:
Feilding 27 (Brad Carr 2, Chris Tunnicliffe tries; Carr 3 con; Gary Simpson 2 pen)
Linton 17 (Jon Adams, Kelly Allan, Cory Cooper tries; Adams con)
HT 21-5.

Oroua 20 Te Kawau 17
An Oroua try with two minutes left pipped Te Kawau at the post at its Old Timers' Day.

Te Kawau had parity for much of the game and when Oroua got in front at the end, charged up the other end, but couldn't get across.

In the end Oroua's bigger pack swayed it, pushing Te Kawau around in the last 10 minutes. The boot of Walker Jacobs kept Te Kawau on the back foot in the first half.

Oroua was down 10-8 at halftime having had the wind behind it.

The classy Tim Taite and second-five Pio Savali kept Te Kawau in the game, Tait scoring his try right on halftime. No.8 Kelly Jacobs scored two of Oroua's tries and led the resurgence.

At Rongotea:
Oroua 20 (Kelly Jacobs 2, Fred Tua tries; Walker Jacobs pen, con)
Te Kawau 17 (Aaron Devlin, Tim Taite tries; Taite 2 con, pen)
HT 8-10.

Bush 14 Freyberg 11
Bush was reshuffled, No.8 Duncan Law at second-five and three halfbacks on the field, two on the wing.

In a scrappy match on a good field, Bush deserved the win. It had the territorial advantage, drove better in the forwards and its scrum was better until Freyberg's Shannon Hepi came on.

Bush also mauled well and Zane Gardiner at first-five put in high kicks which troubled Freys. Freyberg couldn't catch a ball in the backs and it proved costly.

At Pahiatua:
Bush 14 (Rory Murphy, Phil Griffen tries; Jason Liverton 2 con)
Freyberg 11 (Kaisia Forsyte try; Taha Wihongi 2 pen)
HT 7-3.

HSOB 21 Marist 8
Marist ruled the lineouts through Chris Long and Andrew Murley, but was overshadowed everywhere else, although HSOB took until well into the second half to put Marist away.

Kane Barry and Willie Aie led the burly HSOB pack, especially its stronger scrum, while Frank Lene and Semisi Mapusua were a handful for Marist in the backs.

Marist suffered from a lack of a kicking game and the HSOB tacklers knocked over its runners. Marist was jittery clearing at the back and lost too much ball; its try was a long-range, but consolation one, coming too late.

HSOB halfback Matt Koubaridis set up the vital run with a sprint from the base and lock Ben Stanley was strong around the track.

At Bill Brown Park:
HSOB 21 (Ben Stanley, Joe Harawira, Viliame Fakova tries; John Dodds, Frank Lene pens)
Marist 8 (Chris Long try; Nathan Iwikau pen)
HT 8-3.
