One of the stand-in Manawatu coaches, Jonathon Phillips, asked the rhetorical question: Where else in New Zealand would a Super 14 union come to the aid of one of its provinces like this? Answer: Probably nowhere. Only the Hurricanes have the staff in place and Phillips said Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper insists the staff never forget the region. Of Hurricanes' hue, besides Phillips, was new coach Dave Rennie and managers Tony Bedford, Alex McKenzie and John Knowles. There's plenty more graft needed before fronting up to Auckland after Manawatu A, in Evergreens camouflage, finally subdued third division champion Wairarapa-Bush 24-16 after trailing 16-5 too long into the second half.
