Linton Army got its first win of the second round by handing Varsity only its second loss on university turf this season.
They clash at Feilding next week and none of the other 10 teams seems to have the arsenal to cope with COB, the defending Hankins Shield champion. COB trounced Kia Toa 32-2 on Saturday, scoring four tries to zip, while FOB squashed Feilding 50-6 in the mosty lopsided derby contest since 1999 when FOB won 58-14. Two years ago FOB won 48-11. Saturday's win came only a week after a seemingly revived Feilding Yellows had beaten Kia Toa for the second time and was looking to be a force. However, in the last three games they have scored only two tries. The 10th Saturday of club rugby was held amid widespread murmuring about the tribulations in the representative team camp after the resignation of coach Charlie McAlister. With the rep squads now far from set in concrete, perhaps some players have been given renewed hope, as if all bets are off. FOB might have been without Graham Smith (overseas) and David Palu (with Tonga) but COB has players to return from injury including Junior Tomasi Cama, Nick Buckley and Hamish Gosling. Feilding was missing Sam Moore and Brad Carr.
