Sami Hau - in the still unfamilier Feilding colours
When Sami Hau first arrived on the club rugby scene 15 seasons ago, Manawatu was producing such things as All Black trialists.

The Tongan, now 32 and best known for his flying dreadlocks, arrived from Auckland in 1992 to join Varsity, and three of his team-mates played All Black trials that season.

They were Lee Stensness, Mana 'Otai and Paul Alston.

All three have long since retired from rugby, but not Hau. He's the long server in Manawatu rugby, playing as well as ever at fullback with Feilding Yellows.

I have had a look around and I can't see anyone from my time," he said.

"I was at Varsity for 11 years and I really enjoyed the student culture."

In those days Varsity had a healthy Tongan component. Besides 'Otai there were Mike Bloomfield and George Vuni.
