MRFUThe MRFU Judicial Committee headed by Varsity Club member Graham Rossiter has taken a tough approach to foul play this year.

3 players have been banned for periods of at least a year and in one case two years, for serious verbal abuse of referees, and assaults on other players.

This tough approach has to be applauded from the MRFU judicial process as it is not at all acceptable to have the volunteer referee's being verbally abused, or assualted by match player's. [viewonly=registered, special}
Three hefty sentences handed out by the Manawatu Rugby Union suggests a no-nonsense approach to foul play in club rugby this year.

The judicial committee, chaired by lawyer Graham Rossiter, has heard four cases and three have resulted in suspensions of at least a year.

A player in an under-14 schools team was stood down for two years for verbal and physical abuse of a referee, believed to have involved a chest o-chest confrontation.

Another club player was sidelined for a year for vulgar abuse of a referee which came close to physical contact. The third saw a 1st XV player aged about 16 who was put out for a year for head-butting an opponent and then delivering a flurry of punches.

Community rugby manager Chris Ricketts declined to name the teams involved but said the union was taking a firm stance. It's not that there has been an epidemic - there were 10 hearings last year.

Another four players have taken the optional two-week stand-down after being ordered off.
