Two top referees are to join the ranks of New Zealand’s professional referees for the duration of the Air New Zealand Cup. Southland’s Keith Brown and Jonathon White from Auckland joined the NZRU today to begin preparation for the Air New Zealand Cup, which kicks off in Napier on Friday 28 July. NZRU High Performance Refereeing Manager Keith Lawrence said it was important to bolster the refereeing ranks for the new competition.
“Such will be the intensity of the Air New Zealand Cup, we need referees who are extremely well prepared and ready for the challenges. With Keith and Jonathon joining our current professional referees, the NZRU will have nine referees available for Air New Zealand Cup matches,” he said.
Mr Lawrence said in the seven weeks leading up to the competition both Brown and White would intensify their training, technical development and analysis programmes under the guidance of NZRU Referee Physical Conditioning Adviser Mat Blair and NZRU High Performance Referee Coach Colin Hawke.
Jonathon White practises as a doctor in the Auckland area while Keith Brown is a partner in Invercargill law firm Cruickshank Pryde.
Both White and Brown have been given permission by the NZRU to continue with their careers part-time outside of rugby during the terms of their professional refereeing contracts, which conclude at the end of the Air New Zealand Cup.
