In a re-enactment of last season's Hankins Shield final on Saturday, COB, with Barton at the forefront, shut down a Feilding Old Boys team laden with prospective rep players. The score might have been only 17-8 but it was a comprehensive 17-8 for 26-year-old Barton to hoist the Jubilee Cup aloft and retain the Speights Challenge Trophy.
Barton was everywhere, hoisted high to take lineout ball, making wrap-around tackles and flying ahead on attack chasing his own kicks. COB did all this without promising fullback Thomas Trollope, centre Jason Morgan (injured achilles tendon) and utility Junior Tomasi Cama.
